[ALBUM REVIEW] LETYOUREYESADJUSTTOTHEDARK - Amorist
LETYOUREYESADJUSTTOTHEDARK is an ode to 80’s music with a tasteful incorporation of electronic vocals and guitar. This debut album by breakout artist Amorist, released in late February this year, tells the stories of surpassing days lacking friendship and love with a hint of nostalgia. This album doesn’t just let you hear the stories - it brings you along to the scene.
Every song is an amusement park and each section you find yourself on a different ride; there’s no predictability and that’s how you know you’re dealing with a real musician.
E-35 kicks off the experience as a zen intro teasing us with a taste of what’s to come. The repetition of the simple chord progression with the muffled vocals in the background makes for a perfectly sonically-balanced prelude.
Usually in a song you climb up the mountain that is the pre-chorus build up. Once you reach the top you either tumble back down the hill with a predictable beat or you flap your wings and soar on a refreshing melody. In the case of CONTROL, I say bring on the beat drop because the other side is worth the wait! The chorus is full but it’s not overwhelming and blends smoothly into each section after it whether it be the second verse or the outro. Definitely a competitor for my favourite song - although it was an almost impossible decision.
If I had one word to describe DEVOTION - it would be groovy. I could talk about how every layer, melody and instrument individually is a serotonin boost in itself but the only thing I can say - to save time - is that it feels good. There’s this wholesomeness to every aspect. From start to finish every sound and musical choice just makes sense. If you wanna know what autotune done right sounds like, you’ve come to the right place.
If you're familiar with Amorist’s work, you might already be aware of the masterpiece that was given to us last year by the name of ULTRAVIOLENCE. Well, it’s back and better than ever people!! Our favourite song about time flying by has graced the album with its presence and I personally couldn’t be more ecstatic.
Now I don't want to spoil the whole album because there’s so much to it that my words couldn’t even begin to explain, but warning, DEVOTION (SUNSET) has a Michael Jackson-esque tinge to it and you’re never going to be ready for how good it is every time you hear it.
On the whole, LETYOUREYESADJUSTTOTHEDARK brings relatable lyrics to a retro setting. The dynamics and tone of the guitar varies in every song yet it never fails to strum on your heart-strings. The general vibe of the album makes me want to travel back in time so I can reflect on my non-existent love life while wearing fluro leg warmers and a headband.
Not only has Amorist released one of my favourite albums this year - NOT CLICKBAIT!! - but now we get a music video to go along with DEVOTION which he produced and partnered with MaxedOut Films on.
