[REVIEW] Tala - Two Minds
Tala is an extremely talented artist whose voice can easily take you back to the 80s, 90s or keep you in the current era. Her real name is Jasmine Biala but her artist name ‘Tala’ comes from her Filipino roots as it loosely translates to ‘story’. Tala grew up in a musical household. Her Mum would be singing all the time and her Dad was always playing oldie but goodie albums. She blossomed into a multi-genre talented artist by listening to Silverchair, Blackstreet, Barbara Streisand, Regina Spektor, Amy Winehouse and more.
‘Just having a melting pot of music at home growing up inspired the music I’m into now.’ Tala reminisces.
She is an independent artist who would love to work with a band sometime in the future and bring her original music to a live environment. With all her hard work and passion, she wants to eventually be able to bring her music to an audience as she hasn’t quite been able to showcase her talent in front of people yet.
Growing up, she had a love/hate relationship with singing. She didn’t enjoy going to lessons and having to sing in front of people. However, you could find her singing along to songs playing on the radio and singing out loud as she walked down the street.
‘Eventually I grew to love everything about singing, from learning how to use my voice to rocking out on stage with a band.’ She says.
‘I guess I just realised that I had a passion for singing and music when it occurred to me that I couldn’t imagine myself pursuing any other career path.’
Tala has recently released her latest single Two Minds which was produced by world renowned producer Taka Perry. Taka Perry is an Australian-Japanese producer, songwriter and artist who has worked with the likes of Mick Schultz and Max Frost. His third single 21 Orbits features Sydney rapper Yaw and Melbourne singer Yergurl. Together they were able to create a synth-rock vibe that throws you back in time. 10 Things I Hate About You and She’s All That definitely come to my mind. The pop song is very dance inducing and extremely refreshing for your ears. Tala describes her songs as all about being indecisive. So basically when one voice in your mind tells you something completely different to the other voice, listen to this song. She perfectly captures how sometimes a struggle may arise when choosing between two (or more) things.
During isolation, Tala has found that her productivity comes and goes, she’s written up a few verses but hasn’t finished anything yet.
’I have managed to watch a lot of the Netflix catalogue though.’
