[MV REVIEW] GIRL FROM WS - MA RATED

I can only handle so many balaclavas and fanny packs until I feel the urge to staunch my neighbours. Enter M.A. Rated’s Girl from WS - the smoothest afro-swing in all The Area. Featuring visuals from our very own Maxed Out Films, the self-produced tune is a breath of fresh air with a lighthearted video to match.

Skits are seldom used well in music videos, but a classic (and awkward) boy-meets-girl cutscene segues brilliantly into the opening of the track. With arpeggiated harps leading us into a dimly lit daydream, M.A. Rated begins serenading his lady all over Western Sydney. From a quiet cinema, to the local Starbucks and everywhere in between, it seems that no place is safe from the albiceleste-garbed artist.

The rooftop car park montage, however, takes the prize for the prettiest scenery. There’s something about a rosy twilight that captures the bliss of young love, with M.A. Rated taking time to both dance with his girl and squeeze in a Toyota sponsorship (I hope they paid you).

Perhaps most unique about the track is the prominence of the artist’s Argentinian ties, displayed in both his outfit and language switch - ‘Todos los vatos tratan but she’s fría’. The subtle nod to the rapper-turned-singer’s heritage is evidence of an overwhelmingly diverse Western Sydney scene. Suffice to say, the timeless love story of an Argentinian chasing a Filipina takes a leaf out of my own origin story, and drew me to the video in the first place!

This love letter to Western Sydney girls is sure to become a summer favourite in the West. The afro wave is alive and well down under, and we’re counting on artists like M.A. Rated to deliver more variety in the local scene. Oh also, can we get some outtakes of you cleaning up that overflowing Coke?
