I'M MISSING YOU [REVIEW]
Derik Madrid (@derik.madrid) is not yet a household name in Australian music, but his debut single I’m Missing You makes a strong case for it. Spanning ambient R&B and Jack ü style EDM, the track is a bold and daring statement for a debut. The lyrics touch on the heartbreak of a broken relationship, perfectly complementing the fragmented hook section.
I’m Missing You is produced and mixed by LENARD (@thisislenard), who gives Madrid a melancholic sonic palette to write to. As if echoing the cover art, the verses are washed out and gloomy, culminating in the jarring yet fluid transition into the track’s EDM influences. Fellow vocalist Luísa Mariano (@luisa_mariano) features on the second verse, adding an alternate voice to the story and increasing emotionality within the track. Her higher register pairs nicely with Madrid’s, leaving the track with two clear halves or perspectives. The track was mastered by EDM whiz Aaron Roman (@apr_studio_syd)
Despite being a debut single, Madrid has been practicing his musicianship all his life. The pop artist has been singing throughout his childhood across a variety of genres. This history of artistry comes to the fore in I’m Missing You, where Madrid’s versatility appears effortless and unassuming.
With such a strong debut track we anticipate more releases from Madrid in 2023, and if they’re as boundary-pushing as I’m Missing You, we’re all ears.
