‘04 [REVIEW]
If you’re a fan of Southern Hip-Hop, you’ll love ‘04, the debut offering from Sydney rap-scene heavyweights AZTEC FLOW (@iamaztecflow) and Ruu. (@ruu.tcbk). The track is a part of the duo’s upcoming collaborative project STHRN JWLZ, and features dreamy production akin to the glory days of Three 6 Mafia, Ludacris, Mannie Fresh. ‘04 is a multiversal ode to Houston legend Scarface as well as a reflection of the respective rapper’s childhoods.
Those famous trap drums are alive and kicking in ‘04. The track is seething with nostalgia and flair, providing the perfect foundation for Aztec Flow and Ruu. to glide over. Complete with 808 bells and earth-shattering bass, ‘04 is a skillful adaption of Southern flavour.
Both artists aren’t, however, without their own successes. Aztec Flow’s latest single Wish You Me with Lil Spacely is still very much front of mind, and Ruu. has also been announced as a 24/25 Converse All-Star, as if his week isn’t busy enough already prepping (likely as we speak) to open up for Tash on her Supersonic Tour at Darling Nikki’s tomorrow. With half a million stream combined, it was a no-brainer for the two juggernauts to coalesce on ‘04.
Expect more from both artists as they continue the rollout to their joint EP. If they go all the way, expect a tacky Memphis Word-Art-inspired cover to the EP too; fingers crossed.
