About

‘We need more voices from Western Sydney, not necessarily talking about Western Sydney – just talking about anything.’

— Jan Fran, ‘The Western x Jan Fran‘ (2020)

The Western is a volunteer-run online magazine dedicated to Western Sydney culture and its people. We are committed to publishing bold, provocative and incisive writing that offer new perspectives to Sydney’s West.

We acknowledge the Darug people, the traditional custodians of the Darug nation on which this publication was founded. We pay our respects to Elders, past and present, and continue to acknowledge their connection to country.

Founded in 2018 by Laura Legaspi, The Western originated as a media platform covering local businesses, music and art. Our journalism evolved into a hub for community and connection through podcasts, interviews and live events.

In 2025, we rebranded as a digital publication, with a stronger focus on writing rooted in both critical and creative expression. Inspired by literary journals, art magazines, and independent media, we aim to be an incubator for emerging voices in Western Sydney, while also seeking to challenge our assumptions on what it means to be in “the Area.”
